Applicants, including those who are not Pennsylvania residents, who have selected Temple University School of Medicine as their first-choice school are encouraged to apply under the Early Decision Plan. Applications should be received between June 15 and August 1 of the year before intended enrollment. Supplementary materials must be received no later than August 15. Interviews are scheduled in early September and applicants are notified of admissions decisions by October 1st. Applicants accepted under this plan are prohibited from applying to any other medical school.
The Medical Scholars Program provides an opportunity for exceptionally qualified high school seniors to gain a provisional acceptance to the School of Medicine upon completion of their undergraduate degree. Temple University School of Medicine offers this combined degree with four undergraduate institutions in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They include Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Temple University in Philadelphia, Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, and Widener University in Chester.
Although each undergraduate institution has a unique atmosphere and educational curriculum, the requirements of the candidates are similar. We are looking for students with a strong academic background, in the top 5% of their graduating class, who have completed a variety of AP coursework. Students should also demonstrate exceptional standardized test performance. The minimum SAT required is a 1350 in the combined verbal and math sections, with no individual section less than 600 (including the new writing section). The minimum ACT composite score required is a 31. Students with demonstrated leadership and extensive community and health care experiences are encouraged to apply.
Applicants to the BA/MD program must first apply to the undergraduate institution. After review at the undergraduate school, candidates will be recommended to the School of Medicine for an interview. Following an interview at the School of Medicine, select candidates will be offered a conditional acceptance to the School of Medicine. For further information and an application to the BA/MD program, please contact the specific undergraduate institution in which you are interested. Students in this eight-year combined-degree program will complete their baccalaureate degree at one of our four partnering universities listed above. The medical degree is granted by Temple University School of Medicine. Students may choose to be a science major, but are free to explore all available options as long as they complete the premedical science requirements. Matriculation to Temple University School of Medicine is conditional upon successful completion of all GPA and MCAT requirements as outlined by each institution’s agreement.
Temple University School of Medicine offers 6 early assurance programs which allow students to be considered by Temple School of Medicine in their junior year of college. Students entering Temple University School of Medicine through an early assurance linkage agreement will do all of the required clerkships in the third and fourth year at one of our clinical campuses.
Early Assurance matriculants from Duquesne University or Washington & Jefferson College will do their required clinical clerkships during the third and fourth year of medical school at Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh. Early Assurance matriculants from Widener University will do their required clinical clerkships at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Chester. Early Assurance matriculants from Lehigh University, Moravian College, and Muhlenberg College will do their required clinical clerkships at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethelehem.
To be considered for the early assurance program, students must have at least a 3.5 overall and science GPA at the end of their junior year of college, a strong commitment to service as demonstrated by extensive community and health care experiences, and demonstrated leadership potential.
Students interested in linking through the Early Assurance Program are nominated by the undergraduate pre-medical advisor during their junior year and those selected to interview will meet with a member of the Admissions Committee. The Admissions Committee will offer conditional acceptances to selected students. Students offered a conditional acceptance need to sit for the MCAT exam by the end of May. After a review of the transcript at the end of the junior year and MCAT scores, students who have been conditionally accepted and meet the requirements of the agreement will receive an acceptance for the class that matriculates the following August. Early Assurance students complete an AMCAS application by August 1st after the junior year, indicating a restricted application type of “Early Assurance.”
If you are an undergraduate at one of the participating institutions and interested in applying to Temple through the Early Assurance Program, contact your pre-health advisor.
Temple University School of Medicine has linkage agreements with seven post-baccalaureate pre-medical programs. For students who are interested in attending medical school but have not completed the pre-medical science requirements, the Post-Baccalaureate Program is an excellent way to complete the requirements in a formal, structured program.
Post-baccalaureate programs typically attract students who, after embarking on one career, have now decided that they would like to pursue medicine. The programs are one year in length and provide the pre-medical requirements which include one year of biology with lab, one year of general chemistry with lab, one year of organic chemistry with lab, and one year of physics with lab.
The linkage allows the students to eliminate the “glide year” between the Post-Baccalaureate Program and medical school. To be considered for the linkage, students will start the Post-Baccalaureate Program in either the summer or fall semester, complete all required course work by the spring semester, and take the MCAT by May 16th.. Students will be nominated by the linkage program and those selected for interview at the School of Medicine will meet with a member of the Admissions Committee during the academic year. The Admissions Committee will offer conditional acceptances to selected students. After a review of the final post-baccalaureate transcript and the MCAT scores, students who have been conditionally accepted and meet the requirements of the agreement will receive an acceptance for the class that matriculates in August.
