TUSM Admissions

ADMISSIONS

Applicants Invited for Interview

Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM) interviews about 1,000 applicants each year. Applicants selected for interview are sent an email invitation to the preferred email address on the AMCAS application.

TUSM seeks candidates with strong interpersonal skills, who have the ability to listen and take another’s point of view; who possess self-confidence; who are articulate; who are compassionate; and who are socially conscious. TUSM does not conduct “stress” interviews. The interviewers will make every attempt to put you at ease to give you the opportunity to express the “real you.”

Interviews are held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from September through March. Applicants interview with a faculty member from the Admissions Committee and a second year medical student. Faculty interviews take place between 9 am and 11 am or 2 pm and 3:30 pm. Applicants interview with a second year medical student are scheduled in the afternoon, after 2:00 pm. The interview day also includes a welcome and overview of TUSM with the admissions director, an information session with a representative from Student Financial Services, and a tour of the medical school and lunch with second year medical students.

For applicants under consideration for the St. Luke’s Regional Campus, interviews are held on Tuesday’s in Bethlehem. It is recommended that St. Luke's applicants plan to visit the Temple campus in Philadelphia the day after the St. Luke’s interview.

Interview day for MD/PhD applicants will consist of a total of four interviews (2 MD and 2 MD/PhD). MD/PhD applicants must first be accepted by the MD program before they can be considered by the MD/PhD Admissions Committee.

Students are notified of the Committee decision several weeks after the interview, but not before October 15 of the year before admission. Some candidates may be placed on the continuing candidate list after interview. An applicant’s placement on the continuing candidate list is confidential and will not be shared with the applicant.

Applicants placed on the continuing candidate list after interview will be considered after April 30th through Orientation in August. Each application cycle is unique and different so the number of students taken off the wait list varies from year to year. TUSM encourages applicants on the continuing candidate list to send letters of interest starting in May.

The Admissions Committee of the School of Medicine has a three-fold function:

  • It recommends admissions policy, subject to the approval of the Dean
  • It conducts all interviews
  • It makes admissions decisions

All faculty interviewers are members of the Admissions Committee, so you can be assured that the interviewer is fully versed in all aspects of the admissions process.
