Continuing Our Legacy of Diversity Conference
September 8, 2012
The AAMC Committee on Diversity Affairs designated September as National Medical School Outreach Initiative to promote medicine as a career. Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM) has had a long standing commitment to diversity. On September 8, 2012, the first annual conference, Continuing Our Legacy of Diversity, was held to highlight the efforts at TUSM to recruit and produce a diverse workforce. The event had 265 registered participants, 65 who attended virtually. Faculty speakers were joined by a student panel.
Commitment to Excellence and Diversity
The School of Medicine established its nationally recognized Recruitment, Admissions and Retention (RAR) Program in 1971. The primary purpose of this program continues to be the production of greater numbers of physicians from diverse backgrounds. In the 41 year history of the RAR Program, the School of Medicine has enrolled over one thousand medical students underrepresented in medicine (URM) and graduated them at a 93% rate within 4 years. As a result of this commitment to excellence and diversity, Temple has held "top 10" status among all U.S. medical schools—along with Howard, Meharry and Morehouse—throughout the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and during the current millennium—for total number of African-American medical students. According to the AAMC Diversity in the Physician Workforce, Facts and Figures 2010, from 1978 - 2008, Temple was ranked 6th in the nation in graduating African American physicians, thus demonstrating its determination and commitment to recruit, to admit and to graduate students underrepresented in medicine.
