Medical School Office of AdmissionsInformation for 2012 ApplicantsGeneral Information:
Our pre-medical requirements are 8 semester hours of biology with lab, 8 semester hours of general chemistry with lab, 8 semester hours of organic chemistry with lab, 8 semester hours of physics with lab, and 6 semester hours of humanities. If you have not completed the requirements at the time you submit your AMCAS application, your file will be placed on hold until we receive transcripts indicating the final grades from the pre-requisites.
The average credentials for the class that matriculated in 2010 was a 3.62 science GPA, 3.67 overall GPA, and 31.2 MCAT. Fifty-five percent of the class was from Pennsylvania and 59% of the class did something between undergrad and starting medical school.
When we are reviewing applications, we look at your entire academic record, MCAT scores, health care exposure, and community/volunteer activities. All four are essential in the review process.
Entering 2012 Application Information:
AMCAS will release application data for 2012 candidates to Temple in mid-June.
You will not hear from Temple University School of Medicine regarding your application until June 23rd.
On June 23rd, all applications verified by AMCAS will be sent a link to our online supplemental application, TempleMedOnline.
After June 23rd, this process will occur every morning for applications verified the previous day.
TempleMedOnline is your online connection to the medical school admissions office. Here you will:
Applicants are asked to submit a letter of recommendation from their pre-health committee, a school letter compilation service, or two individual science letters. If your school does not offer a committee letter or compilation service, our preference is to review an application with two science letters from faculty with whom you have completed course work. If there is a compelling reason why you cannot obtain the two science letters, we will review your application with the letters provided. Please indicate in the supplemental application essay why you are unable to provide the requested letters.
If you are submitting letters through a school compilation service or individual letters, we encourage you to submit more than the minimum required science letters. We welcome as many letters as you wish to provide for your application.
Temple University School of Medicine participates in the AMCAS Letters of Evaluation/Recommendation Program. Your letter writer can forward your letter to AMCAS through the AMCAS Letter Writer Application, Interfolio, Mail or Virtual Evals. Once AMCAS receives your letter, they will release an electronic copy to TUSM, as long as you designate Temple as a recipient on your AMCAS application. You can check the "Materials Received" tab on TempleMedOnline to see which letters have been processed.
If you were the recipient of an institutional action and have indicated this on your AMCAS application, we require an official statement from the school where the institutional action occurred. This document should outline the details of the event and the outcome of the institutional process. The supplemental application contains specific instructions on how to provide this information to TUSM.
If any institutional action is received after your AMCAS application has been submitted, you are required to send a letter to the Dean for Admissions with details of the event. We will provide directions for requesting documentation from the appropriate institutional official.
Once we receive your completed supplemental application, application fee, and required letters of recommendation, your application will be considered complete. If you were the recipient of an institutional action, your file will be considered complete once the school statement has been received in addition to the materials indicated above.
Once your application is complete, it will be reviewed by a member of the Admissions Committee.
Keep in mind that we had over 10,300 applications for entering 2011, so there may be a significant delay between receipt of application materials and final application review. Some applications are reviewed more than once within the application cycle, further extending this delay.
We will begin reviewing and inviting candidates for interview in August. Interviews will be conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday beginning September 13th. We will interview approximately 900 candidates. When selecting candidates for interview, the Admissions Committee looks for: strong grades, strong MCAT scores, medical experience, commitment to community service, and supportive letters of recommendation.
Clinical and Regional Campus Selection:
Temple University has three clinical campus opportunities in
Our newly established Regional Campus at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem provides the unique opportunity for 30 students to study the year 1 curriculum in Philadelphia and spend years 2, 3, and 4 in Bethlehem. Year two of the program includes more clinically-related integrated basic science classroom study at St. Luke's Hospital-Bethlehem Campus. Years three and four include clinical rotations at St. Luke's Hospital-Bethlehem Campus. Students who rank the St. Luke's Regional Campus as their first choice will interview in Bethlehem.
You will have the opportunity on the supplemental application to indicate your special interest in your first ranked clinical or regional campus. At the time of acceptance, students are assigned to a clinical or regional campus. In making admissions decisions, we will make every effort to honor your selection.
