Temple University School of Medicine (TUSM) is once again listed as one of the top research-oriented medical schools in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Medical Schools 2014 rankings. Temple had the second-highest ranking of all medical schools in Philadelphia.
TUSM earned its ranking by exhibiting excellence in a number of measures including student admission selectivity, research activity, and its reputation among peer institutions and residency directors.
Temple attracted nearly $94 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants in 2012, an average of $183,400 per faculty member. Some of those dollars funded research at TUSM’s Center for Translational Medicine, a research organization committed to enhancing the movement of basic scientific discoveries to improve the care and treatment of patients. Recent research discoveries by Temple faculty include a key biochemical step underlying heart failure that could aid the development of new drugs to treat and possibly prevent it, and evidence linking the human papillomavirus 16 (HPV16) to a common form of childhood epilepsy.
TUSM is an emerging leader in basic and clinical research, and continues to attract some of the world’s greatest scientific minds. In the past decade, the School of Medicine has experienced dramatic growth in the breadth and scope of its research enterprise, and its scientists have been responsible for ground-breaking advancements in areas across the scientific spectrum.
