Temple University School of Medicine Celebrates 105th Commencement

Dr. David Satcher, one of the country’s most distinguished physicians and the 16th Surgeon General of the United States, addressed the Temple University School of Medicine Class of 2007 on May 18th at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Satcher, who currently holds the Poussaint-Satcher-Cosby Chair in Mental Health at the Morehouse School of Medicine, stressed four points in his keynote speech, “Bridges to a Better Future.”

  • Reflect on the bridges that brought you to this point.
  • Choose carefully your bridges to the future.
  • Commit yourself to becoming a bridge for others and be a bridge-builder.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected – the bridges that collapse.

Stella Luo, class president for all four years of medical school, also addressed the graduates, with thoughts on becoming a doctor.   “It’s much more than grades and academics,” she said. “It takes dedication and stamina.”  Luo realized she was on her way to becoming a doctor when a surgical patient said to her, “Thank God for you,” and when a new mother cried after Luo delivered her baby.

 

Of the 169 graduates receiving doctor of medicine degrees, four earned a combined MD/PhD degree.  Additionally, five graduates received a Master of Science and 24 a PhD. The Class of 2007 is 57 percent female with 13 percent minorities underrepresented in medicine; 51 percent will enter residencies in Pennsylvania; 52 percent are entering residencies in primary care specialties and 15 percent will enter residencies at Temple University Hospital.


Temple University School of Medicine congratulates the Class of 2007 and all graduating seniors from medical universities as they make plans to begin their post-graduate training across the United States.
