Commencement for the Temple University School of Medicine Class of 2009, held on May 22, 2009 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, recognized the achievements of 161 students who earned the doctor of medicine degree; two who earned a dual doctor of medicine and doctor of philosophy degree; 16 who earned the doctor of philosophy degree; and two who earned the master of science degree.
The Dean, John M. Daly, MD, an alumnus of the school himself, addressed the graduating students, their family members and friends, and faculty and staff. His message stressed the importance of the support of loved ones to the achievements of each new graduate. “Their success,” he said to the proud families, “is due in large measure to you.”
Anthony S. Fauci, MD, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health, one of the world’s most cited physician-scientists, served as the commencement’s keynote speaker.
His address, “The Perpetual Student and the Changing Landscape of Medicine,” shed light on the ‘paradox of graduation,’ the fact that each new graduate will realize that, upon graduation, one’s student days have only just begun. The dynamic, expanding field of medicine is an “eternally unfinished business,” he said, with challenges and inspirations that never end.
Bradley Hayward, MD ’09, President of the Class of 2009, spoke on behalf of the entire class, recounting rites of passage and memories they have shared. He echoed the Dean’s sentiments about the value of family support. Let’s applaud them for standing by us for “all 1,460 days and 1,459 nights of medical school,” he said.
Nicole Beharry, MD ’09, editor of the 2009 yearbook, The Skull, sang the praises of the faculty member chosen by the class as its yearbook dedicatee, Kathleen Reeves, MD, Associate Dean for Student Affairs. She lauded Dr. Reeves for her “remarkable compassion and dedication” and called her the best advisor imaginable.
In her acceptance, Dr. Reeves thanked the graduates and told them, “You have taught us as much as we have taught you.” She cited some of the characteristics and circumstances that make the class unique. It is the first class to have been taught the school’s new, integrated curriculum and the last class to be educated entirely in the school’s existing buildings, with the opening of the school’s new home just two months away. She praised the class for its extraordinary commitment to community service: tutoring local elementary school children, volunteering in needle exchange programs, planting a community vegetable garden, and serving on medical missions at home and abroad.
Your degree is an important achievement, she reminded the graduates, “but it is only part of your identity.” She encouraged each graduate to “keep compassion at the heart of all we do.”
Organist Joshua Stafford provided a prelude and the processional and recessional music. The Transplantations, the medical student a cappella group, sang the national anthem. William Schulze, Assistant Dean for Academic Affiliations, gave the invocation, and Executive Associate Dean Richard Kozera served as Master of Ceremonies.
Dean Daly conferred the degrees with Daniel H. Polett, Chair of the University Board of Trustees, and Barrie Ashby, PhD, Kathleen A. Reeves, MD, and Richard J. Kozera, MD. Among the graduates were 15 individuals with family members who also graduated from the School of Medicine and helped to confer the degree.
Bradley Hayward, MD’09, led the recitation of the Hippocratic Oath, and William F. Schulze gave the benediction. Elizabeth Drum, MD, Concetta Harakal, PhD, Paul Lyons, MD, Brett Oxberry, PhD, and Carson D. Schneck, MD, PhD served as marshalls. Assisting with hoods were Dianne Soprano, PhD, Sean Harbison, MD, Paul Lyons, MD, Carson Schneck, MD, PhD, and Gerald Sterling, PhD.
The graduates will now embark on post-graduate training at leading institutions across the United States. Twenty-eight percent will remain at Temple or one of its major academic affiliates in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
