The Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree (BSE)
was first offered at Temple in 1982 and the first class graduated in 1985. The
Mechanical Engineering program is a traditional curriculum with concentration
areas in machine design, thermal sciences, materials science, and computer aided
design. Computer aided graphics and design are integral parts of all the
programs in Mechanical Engineering. A major component of the BSME in Mechanical
Engineering is a strong emphasis on student projects, culminating in the senior
year with the two semester Senior Design capstone sequence.
The Mechanical Engineering Department offers two programs: engineering and technology. The engineering curriculum offers a comprehensive theoretical base in mathematics and basic sciences. The engineering courses stress creativity, problem solving, and design where answers may not exist. Emphasis is placed upon the use of the computer to aid in the analysis and synthesis of design solutions. The program culminates in a senior design project of the student's choice. The faculty are experienced in research, development and design. The department facilities include design rooms, well-equipped laboratories, and an excellent computer-aided design facility.
The mechanical engineering technology curriculum (BSET) emphasizes a theoretical base in mathematics and basic sciences oriented to everyday applications. The technology courses stress standard design techniques for commonly encountered problems. The computer is used with applications software to ease the burden of everyday technical problems. The program focuses on laboratories of practical applications. Advanced manufacturing and industrial technology have a special role, and a path is provided for advanced standing in Temple's MBA program in the school of Business and Management.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) in general engineering technology. This program is designed for the student who desires a more general overview of engineering and technology for use in related fields, such as technical sales. It is also an appropriate degree for students who wish to follow up with an MBA and enter the business world.
The technology faculty have broad experience in accepted design and manufacturing techniques. Some have joined the Temple faculty after many years in industry, and their experience is invaluable. The facilities are centered on laboratories emphasizing materials, manufacturing, power, and machine design.
ME Department Mission Statement: The mission of the Mechanical Engineering Department is to provide an excellent educational experience in the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technology programs. This experience includes an emphasis on the technical, communication, and teamwork skills that graduate engineers need to succeed in both the workplace and society in general. In order to achieve these goals, the department places great importance on teaching, research, scholarship, engineering practice and service to the University community and the Engineering Profession.

us personally in the near future. The purpose of Mechanical Engineering is to
design and manufacture devices and systems that transform energy into motion and
motion into energy for the welfare of humankind. We deal with topics ranging
from manufacturing processes, materials, mechanics, computer-aided design,
intelligent machines, thermal and fluid sciences, energy conversions.
The Mechanical Engineering Department offers two undergraduate programs: engineering and engineering technology. The engineering program (BSME) offers a comprehensive theoretical base in mathematics and basic sciences. It has a strong emphasis in student projects, culminating in the senior design capstone sequence. The engineering technology (MET) program will have a new emphasis on Mechatronics, in which students learn to integrate traditional mechanical engineering technology courses with business/computer/electrical engineering courses. The program emphasizes hands-on learning with numerous laboratory classes and projects.
The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering has an emphasis on the computer solutions of problems in mechanical engineering, including computer-aided design, manufacturing processes, advanced materials, and thermal systems. A 5-year BS/MS program is structured for students with outstanding academic records and desires for advanced studies. Dr. G. Baran has developed an interdisciplinary graduate program in Bioengineering by working closely with the Medical School and the College of Science and Technology at Temple. We also have a college-wide Ph.D. program focusing on interdisciplinary research in biomedical, environmental, and computer engineering.
