4. Grants and Awards
National Association of Education Technology Specialists (NAETS) presents
the Alan Shephard Technology in Education Award. This award is open to educators
at the K-12 school and district level who have demonstrated exemplary use of
technology either to foster lifelong learners or make the learning process
easier. The NAETS seeks applicants who demonstrate excellence, quality, and
innovation in the development and application of technology. The deadline to
apply is April 30, 2002.

SMARTer Kids Research is presented by the SMARTer Kids Foundation. This
program was created to help educators research the effects of technology on
teaching and learning and to publish the results of these studies. Each
participant conducts a 6- to 8-month study of a learning environment that
includes a SMART Board. The project culminates with a final research paper that
details the study's outcomes. Projects most likely to be chosen are those that
have a clear research goal and that focus on learning processes. The deadline
for applications is May 31, 2002.

AT&T broadband emerging technology awards is committed to providing
teachers with the resources needed to use technology as an effective teaching
tool. Through AT&T Broadband's Emerging Technology Awards for Educators program,
48 teams of teachers who propose the most innovative projects using cable
television programming or the Internet in the classroom will receive cash grants
and digital video cameras. Entry must be postmarked by May 31, 2002.

Mitsubishi Electric American Foundation: 2001 Starfish Grants offers
numerous grants that fall in line with their mission of helping young people
with disabilities to maximize their potential and participation in society ,
through use of technology.

HP Seeking High-Achieving Schools for Grant Opportunity. HP is calling
all public middle or high schools in the United States that mainly serve
low-income students and whose students are very successful academically,
especially in the field of mathematics. Explore this section and consider
applying (application deadline: April 15, 2002). If your school is one of seven
high-achieving schools that HP selects to receive this grant, HP will support
your future success by giving you the equipment and support you need to
integrate the use of wireless mobile computing technology into your mathematics
and other curriculum. This award is valued approximately at $127,500 including
cash and equipment.

PA State Digital Divide Grant RFP Released. The Department of Community
and Economic Development has just released a grant RFP for a Digital Divide
initiative worth $8 million over the next two years. Nonprofit community and
economic development organizations AND educational institutions are eligible to
apply. Awards will range from $25,000 to $500,000 and unlike most
PDE(Pennsylvania Department of Education) grants, there is no grant deadline.
Proposals are reviewed and grants are awarded on a rolling basis until the
funding has been exhausted.

Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Program. This year Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has
partnered with Phi Delta Kappa International, the world's leading education
association, to implement the annual teacher recognition program. The company
will donate $2 million to local schools with winning teachers. Anyone can
nominate an outstanding teacher by visiting a local Wal-Mart store, Supercenter,
Neighborhood Market, or SAM'S CLUB. Nominations can also be downloaded from the
Phi Delta Kappa web site at
