3. Grants and Awards

Smarter Kids Foundation offers grants to equip schools that participate in its connections program. The foundation equips these schools with leading-edge technology, provides teacher training, and promotes collaborative learning projects. This grant is for fifth- and sixth-grade students. National Science Foundation (NSF) is offering a grant for Gender Equity in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology. The program seeks to broaden the participation of girls and young women in all fields of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (SMET) education by supporting research, demonstration, and dissemination projects that will lead to change in education policy and practice. The letter of intent is due by February 19, 2002.

Toshiba America Foundation provides grants to improve the quality of science and mathematics education in U.S. communities for students in Grades 7-12. The average award for a small project is slightly less than $4,000. For a larger grant, the average is approximately $9,500. The foundation's total annual grants budget is approximately $500,000.

AASL Collaborative School Library Media Award, a $2,500 award sponsored by Sagebrush Corporation, recognizes and hopes to encourage collaboration and partnerships between school library media specialists and teachers in meeting educational goals through joint planning of a program, unit, or event in support of the curriculum and using media center resources as outlined in Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning. Applicants must be AASL personal members. The deadline is February 1, 2002.
