Red Clay pupils close gap in reading
District's planning brings higher scores
Low-income students in the Red Clay Consolidated School District are closing the "achievement gap" between their test scores and those of their middle- and upper-income classmates at a rate significantly faster than the state average, according to a new analysis.
Delaware leads the nation in closing the achievement gap, according to the Education Trust, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group for low-income and minority students. The Red Clay test score analysis was released at a community meeting between parents and school administrators late last week.

EETT Wave 2 Competitive Award Recipients Announced
In June 2004, the Pennsylvania Department of Education announced the LEA grant recipients of the 2004-05 competitive funds under Title II, Part D (Enhancing Education Through Technology) of No Child Left Behind Act.
A total of 69 Pennsylvania school districts and charter schools across 40 counties will receive $10.5 million to improve student academic achievement, help teachers integrate technology effectively into curricula and instruction, and support the rigorous evaluation of projects undertaken with program funds, Secretary of Education Vicki L. Phillips announced.

D.C. School Board Votes to Negotiate With Cohn
The D.C. Board of Education voted to begin contract negotiations with Carl Cohn, the board's choice for superintendent.
The board's resolution called for "negotiating an appropriate contract" with the former longtime superintendent of public schools in Long Beach, Calif., The Common Denominator reports.

$2.3M tech plan being pitched for Bayonne schools
Focuses on rolling labs and curriculum
The Bayonne Board of Education has been presented with an ambitious three-year, $2.3 million plan to plug in students to the world of information technology.
"The information is out there," said David Minard, director of instructional technologies for the district, who pitched the board on the plan Tuesday night. "(We just need) to bring that info to students.
