The Workplace Essential Skills Program
by Dr. Doretha Tillman and Jenaine Booker
Temple University

The Workplace Essential Skills Program (WES) has completed its third successful program year at the Temple University Center for Research in Human Development and Education. WES is a partnership with PBS Literacy Link, the Pennsylvania Career Link, and the Philadelphia Free Library that helps adult students complete high school requirements through an integrated program focusing on communication, writing, reading, math, and employment. Initially, the program’s participants were largely drawn from employees of Temple University’s custodial and hospital staffs who are seeking higher-level literacy skills to qualify for wider employment opportunities on campus. The program has successively expanded to include adults in the city at large. This year, parents of children in the Even Start Program at Duckery Elementary School, one of Temple University’s partnership schools, were also invited to participate.

MAR*TEC staff assists the instructor in addressing study skills and time management. The study skills training includes effective reading techniques, and students are given a timeline of materials to cover to assess their individual needs. The components of the WES program include a video, workbook, and the online component. A minimum of six hours per week is recommended for all components. The students and the instructors, with the assistance of MAR*TEC staff, work together as a team to set expectations for completing work. A certificate is issued to students who complete five of the seven Program Lessons.
