Forty-Five DE Teachers Receive National Board Certification
"I am very proud of the accomplishments of these 45 outstanding professionals," said Valerie A. Woodruff, Delaware's Secretary of Education. "Receiving National Board Certification is truly a testament to each teacher's commitment to hard work and excellence in their subject matter. Woodruff added, "The success of each of these outstanding professionals is certainly due to their dedication to the teaching profession. The Department of Education is pleased to join with the Delaware State Education Association (DSEA) throughout their journey toward national certification."

Maryland Receives Fourth Straight 'A' in Standards and Accountability
BALTIMORE (January 14, 2004) – Maryland's acclaimed system of standards and accountability gained another honor last week, receiving its fourth straight "A" grade from Education Week, the national education newspaper.
Maryland joins New York as the only states in the nation to receive the top grade for four years running. Education Week bestowed the grade as part of its 2004 "Quality Counts" report, released on January 7.

 PENNSYLVANNIA:
Pennsylvania Receives $1.8 Million Federal Education Technology Grant
HARRISBURG: Pennsylvania has received a $1.8 million grant from the U.S.
Department of Education to study the impact of computer technology and its
benefit to students and families.
Pennsylvania is one of 10 recipients of the Evaluating State Education
Technology Programs grant. The three-year grant is part of the U.S. Department
of Education’s Enhancing Education Through Technology program to increase a
state’s ability to design, conduct and acquire high-quality evaluations of
educational technology.

District of Columbia Voters Strongly Oppose Vouchers - NSBA/Zogby Poll Shows
Eighty Percent Also Expect Private Voucher Schools to be Held Publicly Accountable
Alexandria, VA – December 10, 2002 – More than three-fourths of voters in the District of Columbia say they oppose private school vouchers, and 80 percent say they would expect any private school that accepts taxpayer-funded vouchers to be held publicly accountable, according to a new National School Boards Association/Zogby International poll.

 NEW JERSEY:
State Board of Education Adopts New High School Graduation Requirements Effective with 2004-05 Freshman Class
New regulations permitting greater flexibility in teaching and learning skills and knowledge required for high school graduation will take effect with the 2004-05 freshman class. The new regulations represent a shift away from seat-time course requirements in favor of optional ways for students to demonstrate proficiency in required subject matter.
Commissioner of Education William L. Librera praised the new requirements as key to the Department of Education’s mission and to Governor James E. McGreevey’s 21-point plan for education reform.
