State Officers Networking (SON) Meeting
by Jill Stoltzfus Ph.D.
Temple University

MAR*TEC hosted a state officers networking meeting on January 30, 2004 at the Doubletree Hotel in Philadelphia. At this meeting, state technology officers shared their current activities, objectives, and concerns regarding implementation of NCLB educational technology requirements, as well as collective ways to address different state and district needs (e.g., evaluations that encompass scientifically based research requirements). Based on group feedback, follow up to the meeting will consist of ongoing collaboration between MAR*TEC and the state officers through monthly teleconferencing and web-enabled meetings to discuss such relevant topics as creating sustainable professional development, defining 'technology integration', and restructuring state and district educational technology plans to reflect NCLB mandates.

Reflection Connection
by Joan Pasternak
Temple University

Training on ReflectionConnection (RC) is beginning to gain momentum. On February 9, MAR*TEC trained a group of future administrators who will be taking a leadership-training course offered by the Philadelphia Mayor's Council on Literacy. They will be using RC to stay connected between their monthly sessions. A coach will facilitate the group discussions dealing with situations they encounter at their workplace. Training of the Temple Partnership School teachers is scheduled for February 17; they will help launch a research study MAR*TEC is conducting to determine the effectiveness of online coaching. The coaches, who will be working with four to five teachers each, have already been trained. We are conducting a 'train the trainers' session at the Bucks County Intermediate Unit PA on February 20. They, in turn, will use RC information for their own professional development programs.

A meeting at the NJ Chamber of Commerce will take place on February 23 to determine what role RC can play in preparing teachers for the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certification process.

On February 18, Barbara Neufeld a, renowned researcher in coaching from Education Matters Inc., will work with MAR*TEC staff to help structure research in online coaching. For more information about RC, contact Joan Pasternak at joanp@temple.edu

Educational Software Products Review Chart
created by Jill Stoltzfus Ph.D.
Temple University

This chart will help you better evaluate the many different types of educational software currently available as you decide how best to meet your school and district needs for high-quality technology tools and products. More importantly, this chart will assist you in determining which software companies provide evidence that they are meeting the scientifically based research requirements mandated by No Child Left Behind.
