SCHOOL
ADMINISTRATOR SURVEY ON IMPACT OF MANDATES
The recent report, "Rolling Up Their Sleeves," which was funded by The Wallace
Foundation, examines the attitudes of public school leaders about their jobs and
the challenges they face. School leaders say their biggest headaches are funding
and the time it takes to comply with a blizzard of local, state, and federal
mandates. For a summary of the report, see:

MYTHS AND REALITIES ABOUT ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS (AYP)
The Education Trust, an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to
make schools and colleges work for all of the young people they serve, prepares
periodic reports relating to the challenges associated with implementing the No
Child Left Behind Act. Recently, the Trust prepared a brief report detailing the
basic principles and core requirements of AYP, the principle accountability
mechanism in the Act. The goal in the Act is for all students to meet the state
definition of "proficient" in reading and math by 2014 or to make significant
progress toward that goal. For more information, see
