The George Lucas Educational Foundation announces new Web content and a companion VHS cassette on Teacher Preparation, the latest in our Teaching in the Digital Age series. Today's schools face enormous challenges in recruiting and preparing teachers to educate the most diverse student body in our history to high academic standards. Fortunately, a quiet revolution is taking hold in schools of education. This collection of articles, resources, video documentaries, and interviews profiles exemplary programs providing new teachers with deep content knowledge, extensive field experience in the classroom, and skill with technology. This series explores a few of these programs and how they can be used as models for discussion and reform. Grants  
The National Endowment For The Humanities is sponsoring Schools for a New Millennium Implementation Grants. The goals of the program include helping teachers master innovative uses of technology; encouraging collaboration with schools, libraries, museums, and higher education; and implementing professional development all within the context of improving humanities education. Award amounts depend on the size and scope of the program. The deadline for applications is October 1st. The National Science Foundation is seeking applicants for its Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grants for 2002. ATE's purpose is to produce more science and engineering technicians by promoting better training in math and sciences in high schools and community colleges. The expected funding is $39 million, to be distributed among about 75 grantees nationwide. There are two kinds of grants, for individual projects, with awards from $25,000 to $300,000 each year for up to three years, and grants for regional and/or national centers of excellence, with funding up to a total of $3 million. Planning grants of $50,000 each are also available. The projects must be faculty-driven, with a community college in the lead of any consortium. Standard projects can consist of internships for students, faculty and teachers,curriculum development, and professional development for faculty and teachers. The deadline is October 18, 2001. The Kmart Corporation has announced its new corporate community and outreach program that will focus on education programs and promote life-long learning. Kmart will also donate a minimum of $10 million to schools in the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam in the 2001-2002 school year through its Kmart School Spirit Program.
