MAR*TEC Technology Coordinators Handbook                                                                                       146
by

Patricia Hendricks

The MAR*TEC Technology Coordinators’ Network supports collaboration among technology leaders in regions, districts, and schools to address critical issues in educational technology. The district or school technology director or coordinator is a relatively new position in educational agencies. For the most part, these individuals work independently within a region or district to purchase, distribute, and maintain technology infrastructure. They also develop policy guiding technology use within the educational community. As networks, security issues, and tools become more complex, so do the responsibilities of technology coordinators.

The Technology Coordinators' Network grew out of MAR*TEC's 2002 Access and Equity Conference. Additionally, MAR*TEC met with a focus group of technology directors to discuss the information and knowledge they needed. During the 2002–2003 school year, MAR*TEC hosted a series of conference calls to provide regional collaboration and information resource sharing among these educational leaders. The Technology Coordinators’ Handbook is a compilation of information obtained from the conference call series. It also contains best-practice research from the information technology (IT) business community. Chapters of the handbook were distributed biweekly throughout 2005. They were organized into four categories: online learning, building networks to support educational goals, educational software, and hardware. A summary of each chapter is provided.
