Fletcher-Johnson continues to create a culture that promotes the use of technology as more and more teachers are seeking and realizing the benefits of technology for themselves professionally and for their students in the classroom. As a result of 15 hours of training by MAR*TEC staff in May of 2001, 20 teachers received instruction and the opportunity to practice using technology to support project-based learning. Although Fletcher-Johnson continues to have sporadic Internet access throughout the building, the computer lab, which is connected, has seen an increase in use with more meaningful curriculum-related tasks such as:

  • more resourceful use of the Internet with well-chosen educationally-rich resources that stimulate inquiry, problem-solving, research, and a resource for individualized learning;
  • more routine use of computers through the utilization of productivity tools, (e.g., word processors, spreadsheets, databases, presentation tools, and graphic organizers to produce many student examples of journals, surveys, graphs, newsletters, brochures, flyers, presentations, exhibitions, and other various artifacts. There are also many instances of teachers using these tools to generate materials, worksheets, and tests); and
  • the introduction of digital media into classrooms to document digital images and video of classroom activities, trips, experiments, projects, artwork and school-community events.
More professional development activities are planned for May 2002.
