In October 2004 MAR*TEC hosted a regional invitational conference to help district and state-level educators meet the No Child Left Behind requirement that by 2006 "every student is technologically literate by the time the student finishes the eighth grade, regardless of the student's race, ethnicity, gender, family income, geographic location, or disability." The conference featured presentations by Dr. Jan Van Dam from the International Society for Technology in Education and Caroline McDowell of the Partnership for 21st Century Skills on assessing and improving technology literacy skills as well as panel discussions with representatives of exemplary local school districts to help educators develop solutions for managing and increasing technology literacy skills of all types of students. Participants also heard from Robert Patton who was instrumental in devising Wisconsin's state technology literacy plan. Conference attendees offered suggestions for assessing technology literacy in schools, professional development strategies for teachers and administrators, funding technology literacy projects, and furthering regional collaboration on these issues. MAR*TEC will continue its efforts to use the federal requirements to help create a common evaluation tool for the mid-Atlantic region.
