Adult Literacy & ELS

The Adult Literacy/ESL project builds on the Adult Education and Development program at the Center for Research in Human Development and Education, which was established in 1984. The current program includes three coordinated projects designed to support, develop, and extend technology-based, adult literacy training programs in the mid-Atlantic region.
  • Providers Database:

This online searchable directory of adult literacy providers in the mid-Atlantic region, consisting of more than 250 ABE/ESL programs is now available. The directory is an interactive network geared toward the specific needs of the region in terms of languages taught and geographical areas served.
  • Adult Literacy Task Force:

This MAR*TEC sponsored, community-based organization advances regional collaboration among adult literacy providers. The task force is exploring the feasibility of developing a regional adult literacy teacher curriculum.
  • Workplace Essential Skills:

This distance learning program works with PBS LiteracyLink, GED videos, print, and online materials aimed at adults who are at the pre-GED (6th- to 8th- grade) reading level. The CRHDE program is one of 20 pilot sites in Pennsylvania, the only one aligned with a major university. WES focuses on critical skills in four essential areas: employment, communication and writing, reading, and mathematics.
  • Pilot Study of Adult Literacy Learning Materials (PSALLMs):

This research project is evaluating the effectiveness of the HEC Reading Horizons Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself software program with ABE-level readers in the adult education program at the Center. The final report will be published in May 2004.
