Student Surveys

Temple University uses a series of nationally and locally constructed surveys and questionnaires to measure students' experiences, perceptions, and engagement with the university. New students to the university complete the New Student Questionnaire. Each year, continuing students complete a campus climate and experiences survey. In alternating years, students complete either the NSSE or the Temple University Student Questionnaire.

NSQ: Temple's New Student Questionnaire (NSQ) is administered to all freshmen and transfer students who take the university's Placement Examination. Nearly all freshmen and approximately one quarter of transfer students complete the NSQ. The results of the questionnaire are used to monitor trends in student characteristics, attitudes, intentions, and aspirations.
NSSE:

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) collects information from samples of first-year and senior students about the nature and quality of their undergraduate experience. Five "benchmarks" of effective educational practice are reported: Level of Academic Challenge, Active and Collaborative Learning, Student-Faculty Interaction, Enriching Educational Experiences, and Supportive Campus Environment.

Temple most recently participated in the Spring 2007, 2009, and 2011 NSSE administrations.  The NSSE is administered via the web, and students receive all contacts electronically and complete the survey online.  The overall response rate for the Spring 2011 administration was 25%.

TUSQ:

The Temple University Student Questionnaire (TUSQ) is administered to matriculated undergraduates. The TUSQ was developed to serve four major purposes:

  • to obtain students' perceptions of Temple's academic, social, and administrative programs
  • to gather information about students' participation in various university and non-university activities
  • to monitor change in students' attitudes, activities, and needs over time
  • to provide data for assessing factors related to students' success

Most recently, Temple administered the TUSQ in the Spring of 2012.  The TUSQ is administered via the web, and students receive all contacts electronically and complete the survey online.

Future Plans of Bachelor's Degree Recipients

For 2012, Temple surveyed the future plans of bachelor’s degree recipients as part of its May Commencement ticketing process. Graduating seniors who requested tickets to the University Commencement ceremony were required to complete the survey online.
