English Placement Test - Multiple-Choice Component


Part 1 (20 minutes)

There are 30 questions in this section.  The questions are designed to determine how much you know about how the parts of a sentence fit together and about ways to make the meaning of a sentence clear.

Sample Items

1.    Select the best version of the underlined part of the sentence.  Note that choice A is the same as the original sentence.

        In all the cities in Texas, the category with the highest number of crimes is theft.

        (A)    the category with the highest number of crimes is theft
        (B)    the category with the highest number of crimes are theft
        (C)    theft are the highest number of crimes category
        (D)    the highest number of crimes category are theft

2.     Rodney, a taxi driver for over twenty years, is familiar with most of the streets in the city.

        Rewrite the sentence beginning with  " Because....."

        The next words would be
        (A)    of his being familiar with most of the streets in the city, Rodney....
        (B)    he has been driving a taxi for over twenty years, Rodney....
        (C)    of him being a taxi driver for over twenty years, Rodney....

Part 2 (20 minutes)

There are 40 questions in this section.  The questions are designed to determine how much you know about using standard forms of written English, connecting ideas appropriately, and maintaining consistency in writing.

1.    Read the sentence and find the error (there is only one error).  Choose the letter under the section of the sentence where the error appears.

        Nora has tried many diets, but has never been real successful in keeping the weight off.

Part 3 (35 minutes)

There are 45 questions in this section.  The questions are designed to measure reading comprehension, and there are individual questions as well as sets of questions based on reading passages.

        His poor grades in college forced Nathaniel to forego his dreams of attending medical school.

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage.

    An increase in the use of technology is just one of the many improvements the new Chief of Police has made in the city's Police Department.  When he arrived on the scene, Chief Logan moved quickly and the department developed a citywide crime mapping system.   This system should yield valuable information and help the Police Department use its resources more efficiently.

    While implementing changes in the technology that the police would use, Chief Logan stressed his pride in the police officers.  He was often quoted in the local press proclaiming, "Computers are only the tools that our police officers use.  It is the men and women of the police force who are the key to a successful crime-prevention program."
