Temple University Placement Testing
Information for Fall 2013 Incoming Students

Placement Testing as Part of New Student Orientation

All incoming Temple students are required to take University Placement Tests prior to their first semester. These tests are designed to help assess mastery of certain basic skills, to point out particular strengths and weaknesses, and to assist in designing a program of study. Placement Tests are offered in English, Math, and Foreign Languages. Incoming students also complete a New Student Questionnaire (NSQ).

What Placement Tests are offered?

The Placement Test consists of four parts:

  1. New Student Questionnaire (NSQ)
  2. English
  3. Math
  4. Foreign Language

Who must take Placement Tests?

All incoming freshmen must access the Online Placement Testing website to take the NSQ and Placement Tests prior to their first semester; including English, Math, and possibly Foreign Language (if a student has previously studied a foreign language and meets the criteria as stated below in the Foreign Language Placement Examination section).

Must transfer students take Placement Tests?

All incoming transfer students must access the Online Placement Testing website to take the NSQ and required Placement Tests prior to their first semester. Transfer students will receive an Evaluation of Transfer Credit statement from the Admissions Office which has information about the tests from which they are exempt.

How are Placement Tests scheduled for incoming students?

Incoming students will not schedule an appointment for Placement Testing because the tests are available online and accessible via the internet. The Office of Orientation will send an email to incoming students explaining how to access the Online Placement Testing website.

What is required to access the Online Placement Tests?

  • Use of a computer with a reliable internet connection
  • Internet Explorer or Safari
  • AccessNet Username and Password

Are the procedures different for students with disabilities?

Students with disabilities requiring accommodations for Placement Testing must first contact Disability Resources and Services.

How will students receive the results of their Placement Tests?

Test results will be made available to students when they meet with their academic advisor during orientation. For information about New Student Orientation, go to the Office of Orientation website.

May students retake Placement Tests?

Students should direct all inquiries to retake a Placement Test to their academic advisor.

New Student Questionnaire
This is a personal data collection survey that must be completed by all students. The data are used to provide basic background information describing Temple students. Temple also uses the results of this questionnaire to develop programs and procedures to serve the needs and interests of its students. It is recommended that students take the New Student Questionnaire first, before taking any tests.

English Placement Examination (60 minutes)

Guidelines -
All students are required to take the English Placement Test unless they transfer a course that has been evaluated as a direct equivalent of Temple's English 0802 or 0812.* The English Placement Test requires students to write one essay.

Description -
For the English Test, students write one essay on a topic chosen from Topic Sheet I or Topic Sheet J which are provided here in advance so they may prepare.

Each topic sheet contains four topics to choose from. A well prepared student would choose one of the topic sheets and then be ready to write an essay on any of the four topics on that sheet. At test time, students will be presented with two topics from each of the topic sheets.

Print one of the topic sheets (Topic Sheet I or Topic Sheet J). Read the exam directions carefully and with these in mind, look over the four topics. Feel free to make notes. This preparation will allow you to get to work immediately when you begin the test because you will have given some thought to each of the potential topics.

Click here to view sample essays that we recommend you read to get an idea of the standards that will be used to judge your work. The topic sheets (Topic Sheet I and Topic Sheet J) are available on this website and within the online English Placement Test for you to print out a copy before you start the test. It is extremely important to have the topic sheet when you take the exam, since exam readers will expect you to refer directly to the ideas in the prompts.

Your job is to help the exam readers understand both the writer’s ideas and your own ideas on a particular issue. In this test, readers are not interested in whether you have the “correct” position on an issue. To place you properly in the First-Year Writing Program, readers need to see how well you read a passage, explain the writer’s argument, and present your own argument in an organized essay with relatively few grammatical errors.

Click here for additional information, sample topic, and sample passing and failing essays.

Essay topics currently in use: Topic Sheet I and Topic Sheet J.

--------------
* Transfer students who completed an English placement test at their previous institution and tested out of their previous institution’s English Composition or comparable requirement may be waived from the English 0802 requirement if they have documentation of their placement and have successfully completed a higher level English/Writing course.  Acceptable documentation includes an official letter from the university’s Registrar, advising unit, a faculty member, or other appropriate university official.
