LSS Holds District of Columbia
Transformation Principal Leadership Seminar
The Mid-Atlantic Regional Educational Laboratory for Student Success (LSS) at the
Temple University Center for Research in Human Development and Education (CRHDE)
held a District of Columbia Transformation Principal Leadership Seminar at the
Gallaudet University Kellogg Conference Center on December 5, 2001. This seminar—part
of LSS's services to nine Transformation Schools in Washington, DC—was held to assist school
principals in addressing issues that impact improved student achievement.
The guest presenter for this seminar was Dr. Deanna Burney, Senior Fellow
at the University of Pennsylvania Consortium for Policy Research in
Education. She presented concepts on building a learning community,
identification of factors influencing student achievement, and the classroom
conditions essential for instructional leadership teamwork.
LSS Senior Research Associate Addie M. Johnson provided the overview to
the seminar, while the closing remarks were provided by LSS Executive
Director Dr. JoAnn Manning and by LeGrande Baldwin, Assistant Superintendent
for Transformation Schools.
The Transformation Schools are part of The Children First Initiative.
Nine schools have been identified for complete transformation under The
Children First Initiative: Davis Elementary School, H.D. Cooke Elementary
School, LaSalle Elementary School, Noyes Elementary School, Simon Elementary
School, Turner Elementary School, Kramer Middle School, R.H. Terrell Junior
High School, and Phelps Career Senior High School. These schools were
selected largely because they are targeted assistance schools, and school
climate was also a selection criterion. Transformation will entail a
complete redeployment of administrative and instructional staff as well as a
complete revamping of the school program. |
