National Invitational Conference on "Nurturing Morality"
The Laboratory for Student Success (LSS) and The Johnson Foundation
cosponsored a conference on September 4-6, 2002 at the prestigious
Wingspread Conference Center in Racine, Wisconsin. The conference
is part of the LSS Signature Series and national leadership area of educational leadership. The
purpose of the conference was to develop practical
advice for educators and others dealing with moral
development in young people. Researchers and
collaborators gathered in the construction of policies
and practices for nurturing moral virtue in American life.
Dr. Martin Marty, Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service
Professor Emeritus from the University of Chicago, was
the keynote speaker and set the stage with his remarks
on the need for exemplars as today’s youth acquire a
moral orientation.
Topics ranged from social inequity encouraging antisocial behavior, to
aggression and prejudice, and finally conflict resolution.
Papers were commissioned in advance from experts in the
field and pre-circulated to conferees to leave ample
time at the event for discussion and development of
next-step recommendations. Numerous other participants researchers, educators, and policymakers
participated in the 3-day event.
