LSS Convenes Educational Leadership Conference
The Laboratory for Student Success (LSS) sponsored a
National Invitational Conference on “Educational Leadership” in Tysons
Corner, Virginia on May 20-21, 2002. The conference opened to a full house
greeting keynote speaker Joseph Murphy of Ohio State University. Dr. Murphy
spoke of new ways of understanding educational leadership, and used the
three metaphors of leader as moral steward, educator, and community builder
to frame the discussion for the two-day conference. “Leaders must learn to
lead by empowering rather than controlling; enabling leadership has a
softer, less heroic hue,” stated Murphy.
Several thought-provoking panels and lively,
participatory discussion proceeded from the opening session. Participants
were well-prepared to engage in dialogue, having received copies in advance
of the latest book edited by Joseph Murphy, “The Educational Leadership
Challenge: Redefining Leadership for the 21st Century,” which
formed the springboard for discussion. They discussed viewpoints and
recommendations on such topics as reculturing the profession and reshaping
leadership in action. The book is the 2002 edition of the Yearbook Series of
the National Society for the Study of Education (NSSE), who co-sponsored the
conference with LSS.
Participants included policy makers, researchers,
academicians, superintendents, principals, teachers, parents, and various
other stakeholders, representing 29 states and 6 of the ten regional
educational laboratories.
