There were 76 participants from the mid-Atlantic region at the conference
sharing information on collaborative projects supported through the
Deans and Superintendents Network of LSS. A Keynote address was
presented by Dr. David Monk, Dean of the College of Education, Penn State
University. Dr. Monk talked about the challenges, potential pitfalls, and rewards
of collaborative projects between school districts and colleges and
universities.
Dr. Monk pointed out in his keynote address that, "...different
departments don't talk to each other at the university level, let
alone schools of education talking to actual school districts. There
has never been a history or a model for close collaboration between
school districts and colleges of education."
There were presentations from teams representing the following
collaborative projects: Fairleigh Dickinson University and Elizabeth City, NJ, School
District Partnership; Rowan University and Glassboro, NJ, School
District Partnership; University of Maryland and Prince Georges County Schools
Partnership; Kean University and Hillside, Newark, Roselle, and
Woodbridge, NJ, School Districts Partnerships; Howard University and
Washington, DC, School District Partnership. The group appreciated
the sharing of information on the various projects and the chance to
network with others who are planning college/university--school
district partnerships.
