The Mid-Atlantic Regional Teacher Project (MARTP) Annual
Invitational Executive Seminar was held in Baltimore on

of Schools of Education, regional policymakers, and
education association representatives were in attendance.
The meeting was co-sponsored by the Council for Basic
Education (CBE), the Laboratory for Student Success (LSS),
and the Maryland State Department of Education. The meeting
opened with remarks by Buzz Bartlett, President of CBE and
JoAnn Manning, Executive Director of LSS. Michael Petrilli,
Associate Deputy Under Secretary, Office of Innovation and
Improvement, U. S. Department of Education, was the Keynote
Speaker.
The focus of the meeting was a MARTP proposal for a regional
Meritorious New Teacher Candidate Designation. Incentives,
implications, and regional implementation issues were
discussed, including identifying outstanding candidates and
selecting potential financial and status benefits. The
designation is viewed as part of a process of recognizing
the status of the teaching profession. The group agreed that
MARTP should move forward with the proposal and address the
approval process in the various states in the mid-Atlantic
region. |
