The main items on the agenda included a review of the
national literacy agenda fostered by President Bush and
Secretary of Education Rodney Paige, current literacy
issues in high schools, understanding student attitudes,
and building student confidence. The seminar focused on
strategies that strengthen reading instruction, reading
styles, constructivist processes which include
metacognitive approaches and reciprocal teaching, and
identification of indicators for instruction within
subject content texts.
The seminar was well received by the principal, Mrs.
Wilson Ann Addison, the school facilitator, Ms. Martha
Meshaw, and all of the teachers who attended. The
feedback commentary cited appreciation for the
presentations, the excellent knowledge base of the
presenters, and the degree of useful information to
enhance actual classroom practice.
