In the summer of 2002, an LSS Advanced Study Institute convened school
leaders to begin developing literacy plans for their
schools. A follow-up seminar was held on January 30-31,
2003, for fourteen principals to share their completed plans
with their colleagues and critical friends. Successes were
recounted, problems or barriers were described, and the
participants collaborated to suggest solutions. In
addition, the seminar focused on using data to drive
decision making. Examples from the Brazosport Independent
School District were provided in addition to the process of
data collection and interpretation known as “20/20
Analysis.” The process was explained and tools provided for
participants to explore and use in their buildings. The
seminar ended and principals reflected in their journals.
[a brief overview]
This follow-up seminar to the Advanced Study Institute: Leadership for
Literate Schools, provides participant principals with
additional theory and promising practices for implementing
state of the art literacy programs in their schools in
keeping with the No Child Left Behind legislation. Principal
invitees will revise and modify the action plans previously
created to implement the Blueprint for Literacy. The
Blueprint for Literacy was developed by the Children’s
Literacy Initiative located in Philadelphia, PA and
presented in collaboration with the Laboratory for Student
Success, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Educational Laboratory at
Temple University. Participants will identify Implementation
barriers and benefits. These barriers and benefits will be
identified and discussed using critical friends and fellow
seminar participants. Additional next step recommendations
will supplement existing action plans.
