“School Leadership and the New
Accountability” was the theme for the Fourth Annual
National Principals’ Forum held on October 3-4, 2002 in
Washington, DC. Principals from over 35 states gathered
for two days of discussion and presentations from
experts and practitioners on a variety of issues
focusing on the recent No Child Left Behind Act.
Information, solutions, experience sharing and
networking were the hallmarks of this popular annual
event.
Principals in attendance heard from
Susan Sclafani of the U. S. Department of Education on
the perspective from the department on the new, No
Child Left Behind legislation; Christopher Mazzeo,
Senior Policy Analyst from the National Governors
Association, who summarized policy implications of the
legislation, Robert Sternberg on “Teaching for
Successful Intelligence”; and Michael Kamil on the
“Impact of the National Reading Panel”. In addition,
voices from the field were heard as Brazosport
Independent School District, Texas principals who have
succeeded in leading their schools from low performing
to high performing spoke about their experiences and
lessons learned. Richard La Four, consultant and former
principal, described how his high school closed the
achievement gap and changed its culture representative
of the No Child Left Behind initiative. The Forum
provided attendees an opportunity to learn more about
the regional educational laboratories and for principals
from Massachusetts to Alaska to network and share their
expertise and lessons learned.
This event is a collaboration of
the Laboratory for Student Success (LSS), the Lab at
Brown (LAB), and the Northwest Regional Educational
Laboratory (NWREL). All regional educational
laboratories were invited to participate and send
principals from their region.
