Dr. John Chen, LSS research associate and professor of
mathematics at Temple University, is shown in following pictures
as he leads a professional development session on teaching
algebra. These training sessions are a part of a
collaborative project between LSS and the Philadelphia
Federation of Teachers (PFT) that is designed to train
"Teacher Leaders" from Philadelphia middle schools, who will
in turn, train cohorts of math teachers from their
respective schools. As part of the LSS Professional
Development Program, Dr. Chen has designed a 10-part series
of classes on teaching algebra. His program is fashioned
after Chinese principles for teaching mathematics that
reduce complex areas of math into a limited number of core
concepts that are used as fundamental "building blocks" for
mastery of all areas of higher mathematics. The long-term
goal of this LSS/PFT collaborative project is to nurture and
support the development of a new culture of mathematics in
the Philadelphia public schools.
