“Leadership for Literate Schools” was the
topic at a three-day Advanced Study Institute held July 23-25 at LSS, in collaboration with the Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI)
of Philadelphia. CLI focuses on supplying excellent book
collections to schools, and has developed a wide range of
workshops and training manuals for teachers, parents, and
principals. The LSS/CLI program focused on a “Blueprint for
Literacy,” and the principal’s role in improving literacy
instruction. The fifty principals and program specialists in
attendance from across the country participated in a wide range
of professional development activities and informational
sessions as they heard from experts and practitioners on what
principals need to know, including such topics as:
- What is critical for principals to know
to be the literacy instruction leaders in their schools?
- What are the most effective ways for
principals to learn what they need to know?
- What organizational and collaborative
structures support effective instructional leadership?
Participants at the lively three-day sessions were exposed to
not only professional development they could use in their own
schools and classrooms but were introduced to new training
manuals and teaching materials, including some of the most
enduring and current reading material for children.
