The Temple Journal of Science, Technology & Environmental
Law Proudly Announces Its
2008 Symposium
Shaping the Future of Medical Practice: Legal and
Ethical Considerations
Friday, February 22, 2008
Shusterman Hall, Temple
University
Registration: 8:30 a.m.
Symposium: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
With physicians and patients
facing increasing expense associated with medical malpractice litigation, how
can physicians, attorneys, and lawmakers work together to improve healthcare
practices?
Many
factors contribute to the exorbitant costs of healthcare in the U.S.
Since the first medical malpractice crisis of the 1970s, we have become aware
of the problem of rising healthcare costs and implemented numerous reforms to
stave off further crisis, characterized primarily by lack of access to
medical care. None of these reforms have eradicated the tensions that arise
due to medical malpractice litigation.
However, the legal and medical professions have adapted their duties
to fit the changing reality.
This
symposium will address the various legal issues encountered by physicians and
attorneys as physicians strive to provide quality medical care while ensuring
that patients are treated effectively. The symposium will include discussions
about attorney strategies, physician ethics and disclosure policies, the
impact on insurance, and legislation aimed at limiting physician liability.
