The Annual I. Herman Stern Moot Court Competition is named for the late Professor of Law, I. Herman Stern, a highly respected jurist who taught law at Temple University from 1948 until his death in 1979.

The Stern Competition is only open to Moot Court Members. Each year the Moot Court Honor Society is honored to have Professor Stern's family members as guests at the final round of oral arguments in the competition.

Advocates in the Stern Competition are law students who have achieved membership in the Moot Court Honor Society. Advocates participate in the competition upon completion of the Appellate Advocacy course taught by the law school's Legal Research and Writing Faculty.

During the Appellate Advocacy course, students are presented with a pending U.S. Supreme Court case, and are required to write an appellate brief for either the petitoner or respondent. Each student presents oral arguments for both the petitioner and respondent during the preliminary rounds of the competition. The four advocates earning the highest scores advance to the final round of the competition and present their arguments in the Moot Court Room.
