2011 Polsky Competition
Oral Arguments - Round
1: September 17, 2011 Frequently Asked Questions
1. How is the competition structured? Advocates in the Polsky Competition are presented with a civil or criminal case on appeal and select a party to represent as counsel for either the petitioner or respondent. Each advocate must write an appellate brief, and argue for both the petitioner and respondent during the two preliminary rounds of oral arguments. Advocates earning the highest combined brief and oral argument scores are extended an invitation to join the Moot Court Honor Society. Fewer than 20 students receive an invitation each year. The top 8 advocates are selected to compete in the semi-final round of the competition. Four advocates are selected during the semi-final round to appear in the Moot Court Room to present their argument during the final round of the competition. For years, Professor Polsky's family members have been honored guests at the final round of oral arguments. 2. Who can participate in the Polsky Competition? Participation in the Samuel Polsky Moot Court Selection Competition is open to all students who have completed the first year of law school. Third-year, evening and transfer students are all encouraged to participate in the competition. 3. When does the competition begin? The competition begins at the end of the summer. The competition packet will be released shortly before classes begin. As the competition approaches our Vice President and Polsky Competition Chairperson, Inna Goykhman, will send out periodic emails outlining competition rules and deadlines. While an email announcing the competition has started will be sent to the entire student body and the competition packet will be available on this site, students interested in competing should send Inna their contact information. Inna will email the competition packet the morning the competition begins to all students on the list. 4. Do I have to participate in the Polsky Competition to become a member of the Moot Court Honor Society? Yes. Participation in the Samuel Polsky Moot Court Selection Competition is the only way for students to be selected for an invitation to join the Moot Court Honor Society. 5. What are the benefits of becoming a member of the Moot Court Honor Society? During Fall OCI, you will quickly discover the value law firms place on students who are members of the Moot Court Honor Society. Law firms place a high value on Moot Court members for a variety of reasons apart from the prestige that membership has among the legal community. Employers know that the select group of students invited to join the Moot Court Honor Society have the following skills: Excellent Writing Skills - the writing you practice and learn on Moot Court is different from scholarly writing skills developed on Law Review. Moot Court members develop practical writing skills that will benefit them throughout their legal careers. You will learn how to persuasively advocate for your clients through written motions and briefs. Oral Advocacy Skills - arguing to a tribunal is more than standing up and speaking. Moot Court members learn how to become comfortable making persuasive arguments while challenged by judges. You will utilize these skills in every facet of your career. You will be more comfortable and persuasive when performing in court, speaking with partners and running board rooms. Better Grades - participation in Moot Court will assist you in better understanding issues and cases during your law school career. You will become more comfortable performing under the Socratic Method and a more effective communicator in Trial Advocacy courses. Overall Confidence - Moot Court members learn how to communicate in a manner that is persuasive. You will carry this with you throughout your life. Whether negotiating for a client or at the car dealership, your level of confidence will be apparent. 6. If I am invited to join the Moot Court Honor Society, how does my participation impact the rest of my law school career? Students selected for an invitation to join the Moot Court Honor Society are automatically registered for an Appellate Advocacy course in the Spring Semester, which is only open to Moot Court members. At the end of the Appellate Advocacy course, all students compete in the Stern Moot Court Competition. Members earn 3 credits for successfully completing this course and it fulfills the research paper component of the upper level writing requirements. During the second year of membership on Moot Court, members are required to compete in one moot court competition outside of the law school. Members receive 2 additional credits for meeting this requirement. 7. Is there any way to prepare for the Polsky Competition, so I am the best competitor I can be? Absolutely! While the competition does not officially begin until the end of the summer, there are many ways you can begin preparing to compete. The Moot Court Honor Society is here to help you become a skilled appellate advocate, which will certainly make you a stronger competitor. Once the competition begins, we will hold information sessions during the brief-writing period to answer any questions you may have regarding the competition rules. Additionally, before the oral-argument stage of the competition we will provide you with an appellate advocacy workshop and a sample oral argument. You should also visit the sights and sounds link found on the law school's home page. Once you are on the sights and sounds page select the special events link to view video of the final rounds of previous Polsky and Stern competitions.
