Welcome to the Department of Journalism

The Department of Journalism is one of the nation's oldest communications programs. We recently celebrated our 75th anniversary! Our graduates have long dominated the region's media market, but many have high-level positions across the nation. We can boast of three Pulitzer Prize winners - Clarence Williams for photo journalism, Joby Warrick for investigative reporting and John Dotson for Public Service Reporting.

Moreover, we are just one of two Pennsylvania programs meeting professional standards of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Accredited status means that a national team of reviewers has recognized that our classes are of appropriate size, our faculty includes accomplished practitioners and scholars in the field, and our curriculum (and the technology that supports it) is up to date, with attention to diversity and commitment to a strong liberal arts foundation.

Our newest initiative is our Multimedia Urban Reporting Lab (MURL), located on Temple's Center City campus across from Philadelphia's City Hall. Here, our students experience 21st century journalism, exploring new ways of reporting and distributing news and information, neighborhood by neighborhood. Students work together, and online, using their expertise as newspaper, broadcast, magazine, and photo journalists. It is an exciting venture that's redefining Temple Journalism.

At Temple, students have the opportunity to specialize in one of several sequences in broadcast journalism, in news-editorial journalism, in photography for the mass media, and in magazine journalism. We also offer a Master of Journalism degree.

Our curriculum is also enriched by our location in one of the nation's largest media centers. A rich, vibrant internship program takes advantage of our location, and our many graduates working as news professionals.

Temple's Department of Journalism offers students the opportunity to learn journalism with top educators in a urban environment that serves as a communications laboratory.
