Graduate Courses

JOU 5001 Contemporary Issues in Journalism - 4 credits
Required for all other course in the program except for 5002 News Reporting. Overview of communications industry, influences on news media, introduction to regulation and issues of the day. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5002 News Reporting - 4 credits
Required for all other courses except for 5001 Contemporary Issues in Journalism. Should be taken as first or second course in the program. Instruction in research and writing news story, style and structure, copy editing as well as discussion of nature of news. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5003 News Editing - 4 credits
Accelerated, in-depth, computer-based instruction in editing; editorial judgment, accuracy; headline writing; fundamentals of page makeup; use of illustrations.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5004 Journalism Research- 4 credits
Computer-based exploration of the Internet, World Wide Web, databases and on-line libraries to develop information gathering and presentation skills. Research approaches and data analysis emphasized.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5005 Communication Law - 4 credits
Examines First Amendment theory, legal concepts and related court cases to reveal how judicial values are linked to the work of media professionals and the free-expression rights of citizens.  Research, analysis and application of the law are emphasized.
Prerequisites: 20 hours of graduate work completed. Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5101 Public Affairs Reporting- 4 credits
Instruction in feature writing and computer-assisted investigative reporting, primarily dealing with public affairs in the Philadelphia area.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5131 Web Publishing - 4 credits
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5151 Literary Writing in Journalism- 4 credits
Writing in the increasingly popular narrative style of today's journalism. Style and techniques often associated with fiction are critically examined and applied. Related ethical issues discussed.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5121 Magazine Writing - 4 credits
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5201 The American Magazine - 4 credits
Analysis of content, editorial policy and trends in American magazine journalism; discussion of publishing procedures; marketing, circulation, and advertising problems; reader research. Class project: create prototype issue of magazine, with prospectus, advertising, and promotional materials.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5211 Media Management - 4 credits
Comparison of the organizational structures of news media; editorial content, advertising, circulation, and business aspects.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5221 Communication History - 4 credits
Study of the technological and social development of communication systems from ancient to present times with emphasis on historical/descriptive research methods.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5251 Communication Research Methods - 4 credits
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5700 Seminars in Communication - 4 credits
Special-topic courses in a broad range of communication areas including print and broadcast news, magazines, public relations, advertising, and new technologies.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5986 Internship - 1-4 credits
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor required.

JOU 5982 Directed Projects - 1-4 credits
Faculty-supervised independent study in applied communication fields; includes internships.
