Only a 30-minute ride on the 23 bus will bring you to unimaginable thrift store havens. Many people aren't aware of the quirky Bargain Thrift Store on Germantown Avenue or the expansive Salvation Army on Pechin Street in Manayunk if it weren't for the Thrift Store Tour led by honors religion professor Laura Levitt.

Professor Battles Preconceived Notions About Jews and Race

‘Most people, if they meet a white Jewish person, don’t ask that person, ‘How are you a Jew?’” said Lewis Gordon, a professor of philosophy at Temple University. “Most African American Jews face that all the time.” Gordon says he knows firsthand what it’s like “to have your legitimacy constantly challenged.” After all, he’s black and Jewish himself. As founder of the Center for Afro-Jewish Studies, Gordon strives to increase the understanding of diverse Jewish communities by providing reliable information, and to raise the standard of scholarship in Afro-Jewish studies by bringing together those who do groundbreaking work in the field.

Temple Professor Works to Create Center on Afro-Jewish History

Philosophy professor Lewis Gordon leads Temple University students in a discussion on African political thought. Dr. Lewis Gordon has only been teaching at Temple University since 2004, but he's already made a name for himself on campus. That's because Gordon, 44, a professor of religion, philosophy and Judaic studies, is building up scholarship in an area few have explored: Afro-Jewish studies. A black Jew himself, Gordon is working to create a clearinghouse for research on black Jews in the Diaspora, called the Center for Afro-Jewish Studies.
