Speak Test

Who Needs to Take the Speak Test?

  • International Graduate Students need to take the Speak test and obtain a certification that their command of the English language will allow them to successfully take classes within their Graduate Program. Those who get low scores will be required to enroll in ED20, a course that helps them improve their spoken and written English skills.
  • International Teaching Assistants need to take the Speak test before assuming any teaching responsibilities. Their Speak scores will determine how and when they can start teaching.

How can one not take the Speak Test?

Incoming ITAs, TAs, and adjuncts who consider English to be their native or dominant language will undergo an oral interview to determine whether they should be exempt from further testing. Please call the office or fill the online form to request scheduling a language certification interview.

Take the Test of Spoken English (TSE) offered by the Educational Testing Services (ETS). ETS charges a fee for the TSE.

You can register online for SPEAK test or SPEAK practice.

If you already took the SPEAK test, you can request that a copy of your SPEAK score be sent to your e-mail account.
