Language Certification

Temple University's English Certification Procedure requires that all incoming Teaching Assistants obtain their English Certification before assuming any teaching responsibility.

Certification Options
Oral proficiency in English is assessed in one of the following ways:

  1. Language Certification Interview
International TAs and TAs who consider English to be their native language may request an oral interview with the ITA Program Director, Dr Aneta Pavlenko, to determine whether they are exempt from testing. Please call the office or fill the online form to request scheduling a language certification interview.

  2. Testing
Non-native speakers of English, as well as speakers of English who did not successfully pass the oral interview, need to pass one of the following three tests:
  • Test of Spoken English (TSE) offered by the Educational Testing Services (ETS). ETS charges a fee for the TSE.
  • The Speaking section of the new TOEFL test, TOEFL iBT.
  • SPEAK test (a modified version of the TSE) administered by Temple's ITA Program. At present, there is no fee for taking the SPEAK Test. Click here to scheduling the SPEAK test online.
