The ITA Program was initiated in 1990, after the
Pennsylvania Fluency in Higher
Education Act of 1990 mandated that all instructors with classroom
teaching responsibilities who are not native speakers of English be
certified in English prior to assuming those
responsibilities.
Teaching Assistants who are not native-speakers of English can take
advantage of ITA programs and services to enhance their communicative
competence and improve their ability to participate in a variety of
instructional roles.

Currently, the ITA Program is operating
under the Teaching and Learning Center
at Temple University. The ITA permanent staff
includes a program director, one teaching assistant, and two
graduate interns. In addition, the Speak test tapes are rated
by graduate students from the
TESOL program.
The ITA office is located on main campus, Ritter Hall, Rm 453.
