The ITA Program was initiated in 1990, after the Pennsylvania Fluency in Higher Education Act of 1990 mandated that all instructors with classroom teaching responsibilities who are not native speakers of English be certified in English prior to assuming those responsibilities.

The ITA Program operates under the Intensive English Language Program in the Office of International Affairs. The ITA program coordinator is responsible for the assessment and training of international teaching assistants. ITA Coordinator: Janice Duenas-McKnight, ita@temple.edu, 215-204-5526.

Deadlines for the SPEAK testing:

  • Testing appointments for Spring 2015 are now available. Please complete the SPEAK registration form below with requested testing dates.

Important things to remember:

  • Temple University's ITA Program will be closed for the winter break from Wednesday, December 24th, 2014 to Wednesday, January 7th, 2015. Please make your appoitnment for the Spring 2015 as soon as possible.
  • All international graduate teaching assistants, including those who have received the minimum scores required in the TOEFL iBT are required to contact the ITA Program to obtain their Certification of English Language Fluency before the beginning of the semester.
  • If you have not yet been informed of your test score, you must register for and attend the ITA course until you do. If your score is reported at 50 or higher, you may stop attending and drop the course.
