Tamara K. Nopper Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania
Tamara K. Nopper recently earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Sociology at Temple University. Dr. Nopper’s research focuses specifically on minority and immigrant entrepreneurship and is driven by concerns about how dominant institutions (state, finance, etc.) influence socioeconomic disparities among communities of color and what this means for the future of the color line. Her publications explore President George H.W. Bush’s rhetorical response to the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, racism and immigration enforcement, the globalization of Korean banking and its impact on Korean immigrant entrepreneurship, and how representatives of Korean banks and U.S. federal agencies rely on color-blind discourse to explain the concentration of Korean immigrants in small business. She currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Sociology and the Asian American Studies Program and at Temple University in the Asian Studies Program. She is also working on a manuscript titled Beyond the Bootstrap: Korean Immigrant Entrepreneurship, Korean Banks, and Federal Government Agencies in Post-Civil Rights America. Dr. Nopper’s public sociology writings can be found at her blog: http://bandung1955.wordpress.com/
