  Eric Tucker, Scholar
   
 
 

Eric Tucker completed his Doctorate at the University of Oxford with the support of a Marshall Scholarship. His doctoral thesis was entitled Towards a More Rigorous Scientific Approach to Social Measurement: An Empirical and Methodological Enquiry into the Development of Grounded Indicators of Social Capital Formation.  He also graduated with distinction from Oxford with a Masters of Science in Education Research Methodology from the Department of Educational Studies, writing a dissertation entitled Towards Grounded Indicators of Social Capital Formation. He holds honors degrees in Public Policy and Africana Studies from Brown University where he received the Truman Scholarship, Royce Fellowship, Noah Krieger Prize for Public Policy research, and graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

Forthcoming book projects include:

  • Co-editor (with Geoffrey Walford), The Handbook of Measurement: How Social Scientists Generate, Modify, and Validate Indicators and Scales. (Forthcoming, 2009) Sage, London
  • Author, Towards Grounded Indicators: Minimizing Measurement Error Through Social Research. (Forthcoming)

His research areas include:

  • The development of measurement instruments across the social sciences, including economics, political science, and sociology.
  • Evaluation and performance measurement within public policy and social enterprise.
  • Maximizing return on investment (ROI) when funding initiatives that promote social capital formation and community mobilization.
  • Public-Private Partnerships oriented towards urban school improvement.
  • Get Out The Vote infrastructures and democratic participation in electoral politics.
  • Urban educators’ experience and perceptions of school change.
  • Urban Debate League operational strategy and educational and social impact. (www.urbandebate.org)

As a the Director of Publications for the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues he served as Editor for the Urban Debate Chronicle, co-authored Teaching Argumentation and Debate: An Educator’s Activities Manual (2004) and authored Building an Urban Debate League: a Practitioner’s Handbook (2006). He also co-wrote How to Build a Debate Program: An Organizer’s Manual (at print).
