THE ISRST CONVERSATION SERIES

The Institute for the Study of Race and Social Thought and the Center for Afro-Jewish Studies (ISRST & CAJS) have organized a conversations series for the academic year 2006–2007.  In each of these conversations, a scholar from another institution visits Temple to engage fellow experts in a public dialogue in their areas of research.

The ISRST Conversation Series presents:
Fanon, Translation, and the Postcolonial Imagination:
A Conversation with Nigel Gibson

Nigel Gibson teaches postcolonial and African studies at the Institute of Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies at Emerson College. Dr. Gibson has spoken at the U.N. about African studies and has appeared on The History Channel as an expert on the Algerian national liberation struggle. His most recent work is Challenging Hegemony: Social Movements and The Quest for a New Humanism in South Africa.

From the Scary Depths of Postcolonial Worlds—Mad Mothers, Mad Scientists, Monsters!  Monsters!  Monsters! Join us in the fright! The talks are to be followed by Bacchanal at the Haunted Tenth Floor of Gladfelter Hall, with the Demonic Society of Fellows and Diabolical Center for Humanities, at 6:00 PM–7:30 PM with a performance by The Barking Spiders!

The ISRST Conversation Series presents:
A Conversation on Levinas

Discussants include Hagi Kenaan of Tel-Aviv University, Aryeh Botwinick of Temple University, and David Fryer of Temple University. The scholars assembled will each introduce his work and set of critical questions on the study of Emmanuel Levinas, the famed Jewish philosopher of ethics and phenomenology, which will be responded to by the other two discussants.  The rest of the time will involve audience participation in the dialogue.
