Thanks very much to all that contributed to the success of PRESENCE 2000, the third International Workshop on Presence, either (inter)actively or just by 'being there'! Thanks again to our sponsors, ITC, BT and SONY, and all the people that helped out locally, to make this interesting and enjoyable event possible. Pictures from the workshop will be available soon from this website.

Meanwhile, you may be interested in visiting www.presence-research.org, a resource site for people interested in presence theory, research and applications.
Aims
The central goal of the workshop is to provide an open discussion forum in which we can share fruitful concepts for presence research, useful measurement methodologies and discuss applications in areas such as entertainment, education, communication and interface design.

We aim to bring together academic researchers in the area of media and presence, content and technology developers, and commercially interested parties so that they can meet, learn from each other's experiences, present their research, and exchange ideas.
Topics
Papers, videos, and demonstrations will be presented discussing completed or on-going work that addresses issues relevant to presence research.

Topics of PRESENCE 2000 include, but are not limited to:
  • the concept of presence: causes and effects
  • copresence in shared VEs and online communities
  • presence evaluation/measurement methodologies
  • presence-associated technologies:
    • immersive, interactive, multimodal displays
    • advanced broadcast/cinematic displays (stereoscopic TV, HDTV, IMAX, OMNIMAX)
    • virtual environments/ simulators
  • social/affective interfaces, virtual agents, parasocial interactions
  • applications such as:
    • education & training
    • medical/therapeutic applications
    • entertainment
    • communication
    • teleoperation
  • presence & design
  • state-of-the-art of current research
  • philosophical issues - nature of reality

Publication
Authors of presentations may be invited to write up a full paper for submission to a special issue of Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments or CyberPsychology & Behavior, depending on the topic and quality of the presentation.
Previous Workshops
PRESENCE 2000 follows on from two highly successful annual workshops (1998 and 1999) focussed on gaining a better understanding of the sensation of presence. Their websites are still available: The Workshop on Presence in Shared Virtual Environments and the 2nd International Workshop on Presence.

Accommodation and Local Information
Booking of accommodation is the responsibility of individual delegates, and we recommend early reservations to ensure you get a room at the hotel of your choice. You can find information on hotels in the Delft area, as well as an on-line booking form, at the site of the Delft Tourist Information Office: http://www.vvvdelft.nl/hotel/hoteluk.htm.

We recommend the following hotels: All hotels are located within walking distance from the the workshop venue, the Techniek Museum on the Ezelsveldlaan. For a geographical overview of hotel and conference locations this map (123 Kb) may be helpful. In the event of all these hotels filling up, we will recommend other establishments. Please inform Thea Kool-Tijssen if you find no more rooms free at these hotels.

Delft is well connected to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. There is a train connection from Schiphol airport terminal to Delft, with one change at either Leiden or Den Haag (the Hague) station. This trip takes about 40-45 minutes. Detailed train information (departure times, platforms, etc.) is available from the on-line Dutch Railway domestic journey planner.

For more information on the historical city of Delft, visit the site of the Delft Tourist Information Office: http://www.vvvdelft.nl/eng/index.html.
