A Virtual Reality Search Engine Project

I'm Matteo Cantamesse, a phD student from Milan, Italy.

I'm working on social presence and conversation analysis in Collaborative Virtual Environments. During the literature review step, I've created (within the Google Co-op project ) a specialized search engine for virtual reality on-line resources. Google Co-op project allows users to create specialized search engine, powered by the Google engine, crawling selected and annotated websites. Up to now I've collected and tagged 100+ resources (from e-journals to lab sites to newsgroups) strictly related to VR topics, presence, social presence and tech news. Now I decided to publish the search engine, so everyone could use it and collaborate at:

http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=008482043968688804374%3Ao1v9ph46qic

If you wish to co-operate or add a website, contact me or visit the VR
Search Engine homepage.

New book: Spaces Speak, Are You Listening? Experiencing Aural Architecture

During my 5 years of research into auditory spatial awareness, which is discussed in my book Spaces Speak, Are You Listening? Experiencing Aural Architecture, I have created the language of aural spatiality. While traditional acoustic architects think in terms of the sound physics of real spaces, I have formulate concepts that also apply to virtual spaces. An experiential language is far different from a physical language.

The ability to recreate a spatial experience at a remote location requires that the acoustics be considered in terms of both temporal and spatial spreading, where the former is based on the location of the sound source, the latter is dependent on the reproduction in the listening space. Listeners experience the two aspects of spatiality differently. For those who have a chance to look at the book, I would welcome the opportunity to continue the discussion of the aural architecture of virtual spaces. Because I have only established a foundation, the discussion needs to be expanded and extended.

Additional information about the book can be found at the MIT Press web at: http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=10947 and I can provide copies of the Introduction and Table of Contents if you send me an email requesting them.

Human Productivity Lab Announces New Telepresence Paper

Howard S. Lichtman, founder of the Human Productivity Lab, a consultancy specializing in Telepresence & Visual Collaboration, Personal and Organizational Productivity, and Sales Model Optimization, has announced the publication of a on the emerging telepresence industry: Telepresence, Effective Visual Collaboration and the Future of Global Business at the Speed of Light. "The paper has been the culmination of over six months of research and ½ a decade of work and interest in effective visual collaboration. The paper seems especially timely with oil hitting an all-time high this week of $78.64 and with commercial aviation having literally ground to halt due to the latest terrorist threats against the airlines.  The paper covers both the effect of higher oil prices on the airlines and the reduced convenience of commercial aviation."
