August 31, 2010 marked the beginning of this year's fall class of interns in Temple's Pennsylvania Capital Semester program.  Students and Capitol legislators and staff gathered in the Capitol to welcome students to Harrisburg, and offer guidance to working in state politics.  The next evening, students experienced a lesson in economic development through instruction from Brad Jones of Harristown Development Corporation and a tour of downtown Harrisburg after a gathering at Temple Harrisburg.

Student Spotlight

Sean Rossman, a journalism and political science major in the Pennsylvania Capital Semester program, was determined to find an internship where he could learn every detail of the ins and outs of state government.

Through an internship with Pennsylvania Legislative Services, he is doing just that. After just one week on the job, Sean had a piece in the Capitol Recap, a comprehensive daily review of events in the Capitol. After two weeks, he had the lead story in The Pennsylvania Letter, a selective report on legislative, regulatory and executive actions affecting business interests.

Pennsylvania Capital Semester Commences

This September 1st marked the kickoff of the first Pennsylvania Capital Semester in Harrisburg.   Nine Temple students were welcomed by the International House, where most students will be living, and Temple Harrisburg, where they also will attend classes.  Both facilities are within a few blocks of each other and the Capitol building.

The staff of the International House, including Virginia Burd, Manager, provided students and organizers with a fine reception. This included a tour of the International House amenities and an introduction to their many activities throughout the year. Vice President of Harristown Development Corporation, Brad Jones, also spoke welcoming the class of students.

Temple Harrisburg administration and staff, including Link Martin, Director, and Anne Eckert, Coordinator of Student Services, also greeted the students and organizers at Temple's Harrisburg campus. They gave a tour of campus, an introduction to the research facilities and welcoming comments from student and staff support. Michael Cassidy, internship coordinator for the program as well as Executive Director of the Office of Democratic Caucus Chairman, was also there to offer words of wisdom and welcome.
