FREE Adapted Smoke Alarms For Families of Children with Special Needs in Philadelphia
Providing FREE ADAPTED SMOKE ALARMS to families of children with special needs who cannot afford to purchase one.
Adapted smoke alarms have flashing lights and/or vibrating signals to alert people who are deaf, deaf-blind, or hard-of-hearing.

To Qualify for a FREE Smoke Alarm
You may be able to get a free adapted smoke alarm for your home if ALL of the statements below are TRUE.
- Have a child (under age 18) with special needs living in the home
- Need an adapted smoke alarm at home because the child or an adult in the household cannot respond to a regular smoke alarm;
- Be a resident of the City of Philadelphia; and
- Meet income requirements—Family income may not be more than 200% of federal poverty level, based on family size.
How Do I Get a FREE Smoke Alarm?
- Send the completed "Free Adapted Smoke Alarm Program" application along with proof of income.
- If your application is approved, the smoke alarm will be delivered to your home and installed by a member of the Philadelphia Fire Department.
What Happens After I Receive the FREE Smoke Alarm?
Once installed, your adapted smoke alarm becomes your property and your responsibility. You must replace the batteries at least two times a year.
