ACES 2008 INFORMATION
ACES is a nationally and internationally recognized program for individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication devices. Key aspects of the program include the development of advanced skills in using these devices (e.g. for telecommunications and computer access) as well as self-advocacy.
In 2008, ACES will emphasize the skills needed for transition from school to adult life (e.g. between the ages of 18-26) although individuals of all ages will be accepted.
After the two week session "in residence" at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, ACES participants receive a year of follow-along services.
ACES OVERVIEW
ACES: Augmentative Communication and Empowerment Supports is a year-long augmentative communication and empowerment program. It is designed to increase the communication effectiveness of adults with significant speech disabilities. ACES teaches participants to use voice output communication systems to enhance their communication. The program also welcomes friends, families, students, and professionals who are supporting people with significant speech disabilities. Participants also learn about resources to help them develop a vision and plan for their future.
The ACES program meets for two weeks of intensive instruction at Temple University's main campus. Follow-up instructional sessions and ongoing technical supports continue for one year thereafter. The staff is highly experienced in the use of voice output communication devices.
Communication instruction will cover topics such as customizing and maximizing a communication device, storage and retrieval of vocabulary, public speaking skills, communication rate enhancement, and preparing for communication situations. Computer instruction will also cover such topics as interfacing a communication device with any computer, backing up and transferring memory, using word processing, using the Internet, and e-mail.
Empowerment classes covering topics such as independent living, personal assistance, employment, transportation, the ADA, self-defense, and personal future planning are taught by members of the disability community.
